You can do something called an upside/downside ratio. The formula is as follows:
(Expected High Price – Current Market Price) /
(Current Market Price – Expected Low Price)
This requires a judgment on your part. You can find the market price on Yahoo Financial for a given stock. However, you will have to decide what the potential high price and what a potential low price may be for the stock in the future.
If you put this information into the equation above, you will get a unitless number. If this number is near or below 1, then the chances of the price going down is higher than it going up. If the number is higher than one, it has a better chance of it going up.
Example:
Present price of a stock is $20
You think that it will go up to $40 in the future
You think that it could go down to $10 in the future:
(40-20) / (20-10) => 20/10 => 2
Therefore, for this example, you have an upside/downside ratio of 2:1. This means that there is a 2 to 1 chance that the stock will go higher than it will going down.
AGAIN, I must stress to you that this is a judgment call on your part. You will need to research and determine a high price and a low price.
